What would cause this? I'm pretty upset that I spent almost $2000 having this built and this happens.

Big nut came loose and let the pinion eat the ring gear. Same thing happened to Firebug. :(

Did the pinion nut come loose? Mine stripped out right after I got my buggy on my 6 rib. Didn't get chewed that bad tho.

I talked to Eric today and he is going to fix me up. I guess I can’t complain too much I got 4+ hard years out of it. The only step up I could do is a Weddle ring and pinion but costing $900 I can’t afford it now.

I was going to say the same thing. Always put a new pinion bearing in them, and nut. I hope your Bearing did not spin in the case.

Eric's going to put it in a side shift case for me. He said they have thicker ribs and my origional case is probably shot.

i sent my 5 rib case out west and the guy put gussets on it and put a steel sleeve in the pinion bearing hole and a nice lock to keep from spinning the bearing

My transmission used to be a S.S. too, there are certain year S.S. cases that you can convert over to nosecone shifter, I think.

The air cooled SS can be.
80-83 Vanagons.

I've seen thick and thinner rib 091 end shift cases too.
Not sure what version came in what year though........ :?
