Bruce, What is the ratio of stock gears in the 6 rib? Are these designed for street or offroad? Is this there race set or the economy set? I will assume they will fit in all of the 6 ribs including side shift Vanagons.

Bruce i did a little research and found that the stock 1st gear is 3.78. Your gear sounds like it would work better with smaller tires off road. To high for anything 31" or taller.

Do you have the locking nut and machined gear for reverse too?

Odyknuck, How do you figure a 4.38 gear is to high for anything larger than a 31? If the factory gearset is a 3.78 then the 4.38 gear will allow for a larger tire then you could run with the factory gear due to it being a higher gear than the 4.38. Gears that are numberically(ratio) higher are a lower gear. In other words, if you had a 29 in tire with a 3.78 gear then swapped a 33 in tire in place of the 29 you would have effectively raised the overall gearing. To bring it back to close to factory with the larger tires you will need a numberically higher gear. In this case you would need a 4.30 first gear ratio. So the 4.38 gear would be a slightly lower gear then bringing it back to factory overall ratio but this would be a good thing due to the heavier tires.
Maybe this explains it better than I can.

Griff you are right on the money. His gearset would work great with 33 or 35 inch tires.

Duh, Im claiming a Senoir moment here. After reading my post I realized I had it backwards. I do not want to go with a larger tire than a 31" Thanks for the correction.

No problem. I just realized you either read it wrong or didn't understand gear ratios. I didn't want someone else that didn't under stand ratios to get it backwards due to your post.

Thanks for replying and this is the better set. and it would work best with taller tires, as Roy stated. Thanks again.
