3- rib trans. i had noise several weeks ago but it went away and after i inspected and found nothing i replaced shift linkage and did some work on shifter. i actually seemed to shift better than it ever had. after abusing it around the house it started to jump out of 1st sometimes. the shift rod seemed to be traveling as far back as it could as far as engagement goes but was still popping out sometimes. the last time it popped out it is now stuck in 2 gears at once and want move just kills the motor. what am i looking for when i tear it down?

My buddy had close to the same problem years ago. His was stuck in between 1st and 2nd. Not sure what it’s called but number 50 in the diagram was bent not allowing the forks to move all the way out.

I also had the same problem with a 091 and it was a loose pinion nut. My shifter would move back and forth when I let the clutch because of the loose pinion nut.

thanks for the reply. i pulled it out and the nose cone off. the pin that goes in #50 in the diagram was loose. ( had slid out at top) the bracket didn't necessarily look bent but who knows. i'm assuming all have an "e" clip that holds the pin into #50. how big a mess am i going to be getting myself into if i start disassembling this trans? if the clip came off could #50 flex enough to let the pin slide out at the top? jd

ok i pulled the belhousing. it looks like the pinion bearing failed. the thin large nut that screws on the pinion bearing race is sheared off and wedged between the ring gear and the case. is it now scrap yard material or what? how much trouble to pull pinion and replace bearing? i don't really have allot of dough to spend on it right now. do i have any options?

Without some of the special tools it takes to work on those transmissions, you'd probably be better off finding another tranny.

More than likely someone has been into it and not had that special socket it takes to tighten that pinion nut.
They don't usually come off if they are torqued properly.

it didn't back off. i actually sheared off the threaded portion of the bearing race. the treads are still screwed inside the nut. bearing race failed for some reason?

That's a bit weird.
I still bet it was loose then pulled the threads out.
Did it hurt the ring gear?

it didn't really hurt the ring gear. how do i separate the case half's? the nose cone and bell housing are already removed.

Are all remnants of the pinion nut gone?
If so, the bolts that hold the intermediate (34) housing to the actual case can be removed and it all slides out from that end.

yes they are gone. i could not pry the case and 34 apart. should the pinion slide through the case and all other parts stay connected to #34?

You should be able to get it apart.
Don't pry on it or try to drive something in that seam where they join together.
We take a block of wood, place it on the pinion and drive it out from the bell housing side with a BFH.

It all stays together.

thanks for your replys. i have kind of given up on the dead horse for right now.

i have found a 5 rib that has been out of bus and sitting for at least 15 years. t was bought for a project that never materialized 15 years ago. the guy says he has new heavy duty sedan axles and 2 new type 1 and 2 new type 2 joints wants to sell as package deal. but i already have type 2 stubs and lots of spare joints.

are the first and 2nd gear ratios the same on 3 and 5 ribs? i know the r&p are different 538 vs. 486. i don't have allot to spend but i was asked to make an offer. what is a fare price? what is a steal it price?

thanks, jd
