Looking to make this modification over the next 3-4 weeks. How difficult is this? I have rebuilt auto trannies and rear axles before. However, haven't been inside a vw tranny....yet. Thanks in advance. |

It's easy. I'm not too sure on the adjustment of the backlash, but it is not difficult. You will need the 091 screw in adjusters and new bearings. |

Weddle Ent. offers this as a "kit". Everything you will need to install a 6 rib dif into a 002 transaxle. The job is very straightforward. Not difficult at all. You will need a special tool to unscrew/tighten the side adjuster cups. You can make this tool if you are a crafty guy. |

I made my tool to adjust the bearings from a part I cut off of a factory trailing arm,,you know that square thingy that the bottom shock mounts to., I had one I cut off and just kinda reshaped it a little so it acts as a huge socket. |

Thanks for the replies. Since I dont have any other trailing arms to modify, I guess I'll have to make one. Looks like I will call Weddle come Monday. |

Long transaxle has these tools in stock. They are good folks to deal with. They also have the pinion nut socket you will need. Go ahead and spring for their how to rebuild cd. Its very good. It has a complete step by step teardown and rebuild along with what to watch out for. It also has all the specs. Make sure you get a depth micrometer and measure the side adjuster depths as well as scribe them for location. If you don't do that, you will have a huge headache setting up the backlash and getting the bearing preload correct. John |

I have the correct socket now but in the old days I used this tool that I made. It works great too! I gave it to Odynuck to use a while back.
