it is my understanding that a six rib side sift can be converted over. If this is true what parts does it take to do this and any ideals where to look for the parts. the big question is does anyone have the parts that they will sell.

It takes more than most people will tell you. In my opinion it would be best to find a whole donor transaxle that is blown up. If you want to just buy the parts you need for the conversion, you will have a hard time finding them on a individual basis. It's almost better to find a good front shift 091 and use the side shift tranny for parts. Sell the side shift to fund the front shift?

You will need to change the nosecone, all the internals for the nosecone, the intermediate housing and the shift rods and the shift forks.

The availability of affordable front shift 6 ribs is getting terrible. You may want to consider using the side shift and getting new shift linkage? Lots of guys going this way! It's cheaper in the long run.

its really only worth doing it if u got both,front shift that is tore up and a side shift that is good u got 2 have both to make one

Which side shift?
Has to be an air cooled Vanagon tranny to use to either convert or to use parts for a 6 rib.
Water cooled is a whole 'nother tranny.

On the usable side shift the shifter goes into the case up near the nosecone. The other "sideshift" is technically a "Mid-shift" with the linkage entering the case back closer to the output flanges.

This is the one that can be converted.

This is a "mid-shift" that can't be converted to front shift:


Notice that the linkage enters back on the main body of the tranny instead of the intermediate housing like the "side shift"

Side shift, mid shift, whatever.

Both have the shifter coming out the side rather than the end.
The mid shift or waterboxer engine tranny cannot be converted to end shift.
The air cooled engine side shift tranny can be converted to end shift with the appropriate parts.

Water cooled? No......
Air cooled, yes.

Water cooled can be used with the shift mechanism mentioned in this link.

Reverse in those are nearly bullet proof.

The water cooled side shift can't be converted to front shift, but could you just make a linkage that is different from the normal ones that works it? After all the ones with side shift came in a vehicle that had the shifter mounted forward of the tranny too. Seems like the trannies might be cheap if you could figure it out. Is there more to the water cooled tranny that would keep it from being a good canidate other than the shifter?

How do those shift? Are they like a ratchet style or does the shaft push in and twist for third and fourth? That pic looks like they shift like a motorcycle. R-N-1-2-3-4 instead of requiring a H pattern shifter. I've never seen one in operation just looked at them and assumed that it was a waste of time to try to use one.

I put the water cooled trans in Oct.botm last winter, cuz i needed the chalange. It was fun I could have used a "kit" but I am not that way. Kits are avalible from sponsers of this site as well as high dollar cable setups and also low dollar junk yard set ups. So you have options. What are your skills?

How much are the kits turboblue?

I think the shifter kit is around $250.00

Huh! I think I need to put the word out in my local scrap yards...that I need 1 or 2. Looks like the setup could have some possibilities. Thanks TurboBlue.

The shift mechanism is $250

The pattern is still the H type but reverse is beside 1st in the w/c trannies.

There is more than one R&P ration w/c tranny too.

I went with the WC Vanagon trans with the shifter setup offered by Turboblue. Its a nice setup. I modified mine to fit my needs. The cost of the shifter is well worth the reverse gear. I actually pulled Plumberbills buggy backwards up a grade and reverse held fine. Well at least untill the clutch went lol. Here is a pic:
