I just dug this out of my pile of broken gears. You can see where the support bearing in front of first gear went out, and tore up the surface pretty good. I'm wondering if I could (tig) weld it up and turn it back down. But I don't want to screw up the heat treating. What if I brazed it up? Any ideas? This is a weddle mainshaft that cost me 700, or 800 bucks, so I can't bring myself to throw it out

I dont know about that?? To advanced for me. Hell try whats the worst that could happen. It snap and ruin everything

Once it goes like that, there is no way you can repair it, it will lose its hardness if you apply any heat to it like welding it IMO. You will be better off to buy a new set before it tears anything else up, it will be better safe than sorry. I would rather spend $800 on a new set than losing a whole transmission including the other gears and the superdiff to which means more $$$$$ to replace. |

try contacting one of your local machine shops. they might be able to metalize it (spray on weld), and then OD grind it. we do it to machines once in awhile. |

The heat treating may already be destroyed but it were me I would turn it down and use a spaser between it and the race. Or you can order a new bearing with the new inner race size and same outer size. Just check on avalibilty of the bearing sizes before you final cut. |

I would turn it down and sweat a new piece over it.Then finish grind it back to size.the material those are made of is super tough i would'nt worry much about the heat treating but I would probably have it magnafluxed just for the hell of it. |

Something like that is what I was thinking. You would have close to the original strength and the right size for your bearing. A good machine shop should be able to do that pretty reasonably. |

Thanks for all the input! I'm in no big hurry for it, I was gonna build a spare tranny for the soon to build woodsbuggy.
