Water-cooled Vanagon.
Most have 4:86 R&P.
Strongest VW based tranny in stock form.

A 5 rib bus trans would be what the doctor ordered for you. Has the 4.86 ring and pinion to give you more speed in first and it still has the nose cone shift so it will be a direct bolt in deal. They are getting hard to find but worth looking for. Should hold up fine to an 1835.

I'll have to agree with what has already been said,a 5-rib or the side shift 6-rib is just what you need.If you still want to rebuild your current trans I can help you out if your local.Where in Ohio are you?

The right answer is a 5 rib with a 6 rib diff. but what most people don't know is that the main gears in the 3 and 5 rib are all the same. so all you have to do is put a 5 rib ring and pinion which is 486 to 1 on a 6 rib diff carrier which has 9 tooth spder gears that are stronger. There is a shop that specializes in bus tranys only in Shadyside Ohio called BT Offroad. I could find their number if you like!!!!

Most water cooled vanagons are 4:86 with the 091 style diff and a killer reverse all it one package.
Just have to buy or fabricate the shift linkage, no big deal.

To clarify the gearbox gears statement, the early 3 rib gears were the same as a sedan transmission.
The good 3 rib gearbox gears didn't come along until '72 if I remember correctly.
Then they were only in the 3rd generation '72-73 model year 3 rib.
Early acorn nut '68 3-ribs were the 1st generation.
Late '68 through '71 was the 2nd generation 3 rib.
5 rib came along in '74 &'75.
091 6 rib were 76-79
