i have seen people rip out there tranny by doing a hole shot thinking they are in 2nd gear only to find out they are in reverse. how about running a wire from the reverse switch on the tranny to a idiot light in the dash ?

I think that reverse switch is a normally open switch.
Check it with an ohm meter.

If it is a NO switch, run a wire from a key on hot to one side of dash light.
Other side of dash light to one side of reverse switch.
Other side of reverse switch to chassis ground.

When you turn the ignition switch on, light is powered up but doesn't turn on.
When you put it in reverse, the dash light is grounded though the reverse switch and should come on.

You can run a hot to the switch and then to a dash light.
I don't like that because that puts a constantly hot wire down low on the transmission.
To easy to have a problem.

The way I told you just puts a ground wire there.
If it gets yanked out or "short" out, no big deal............. 8)
