Do you have to change the bell housing to a standard nose cone shift style in order to use the standard T1/T2 flywheel?

No, but the later (6-rib) and side shift transmissions use a different starter (called an 091 starter)

I wa saware of the difference betrween the sedan/002 and the 091 starter. The bell housing on th e6 rib is thicker. I read a popst on the Samba stating the Vanagon used a larger diameter (228MM over the 200MM) flwheel than the 091 and thats why I asked.

The Vanagon did use a bigger f/w, but the regular (200m) vw one will work fine as well.

So I take it the OD of the ring gear is the same for both.

You need a Bosch SR 87 starter Steve.
The drive sticks out further to reach the flywheel.

Not a good picture but you can see the teeth are out further on that longer shaft.

This is a SR15 starter used on most other trannies.
The teeth are right up against the starter body.

Gary I have the hipo 091 starter, my concern was the ring gear outside diameter on the Flywheel not meshing with the starter gear.

I am not sure about the outside diameter of the bus f/w, but I do know that the part of the housing that centers the engine is the same size as the type 1. In other words, a t1 engine fits into the housing just like the bus engine does.
