Post subject:  Stupid dang trany plug
I have tried several times today to get the fill plug out of this trany. I don't have the allen wrench but used a 17mm bolt to try to get it out. Well I have put WD-40 on it, Rust Breaker, tapping it with a hammer and a number of other things.
Right now this thing is empty of oil and needs it bad. I am open to suggestions, I want to go ride Saturday at the GA Dome.

What is the trany case made of, had thought about using a propane torch on it to heat it but didn't want to catch it on fire and burn the buggy. I already have it in the buggy and motor to. At the time I didn't think it would have been a problem like this.

guess I will head to Auto Zone in the morning. NAPA wanted $12.00 for the one and I said I would wait.

An impact (1/2) works best (if you can get at it). If not, then support the end of the ratchet as you turn. You won't catch it on fire with a propane torch unless you really get crazy. Makes you wonder who put these in sometimes.. I have had some that were a real pain.

Dont use a torch on any alum go get you a 7/16 rod coupler it is a big nut about 3 in long a 11/16 wrench fits it stick it in the hole and put a breaker bar or impact it will come and the coupler ain't a buck

Have used many of the ideas on several different buggys-- Its always at there house and noone ever has tools! The rod coupler does work pretty good ---But I had one try to twist (round) out. I have welded nuts on a metric grade 8 17mm bolt---doesn't round as easy. Lightly tapping with hammer on coupler nut while inside plug will help too.- w? or without heat.

I have a socket someplace if only I could find the damn thing. It never fails when you want to do something fun and once in a lifetime everything goes to hell ASAP. Guess it isn't a once in a life time thing but still. The boy was all excited about going too. Today just hasn't been my day at all.
Got a speeding ticket this morning that royally sucked, pouring down rain can't see two car lengths in front of me and I get pulled over for doing 76 in a 55. There is no damn way I was going that fast in the rain like it was this morning. Then the trany plug goes to hell on me.

What luck I have right.

I've heated the case with propane torch many times to get frozen plugs out. It won't catch on fire, just don't over do it. I would heat the area around the plug only for about 10 to 15 seconds at a time. I would get a large 17mm allen wrech, and lightly tap on the end of the wrench like an impact in the direction you are going to loosen the plug. When you install the plug back in, put some silicon on the threads. This will act as a sealer, threadlock, and anti-sieze. Just don't over do it when you tighten it.

I was so pissed at it earlier that I wanted to beat it with the largest hammer I could find. Then I would have to go buy another trany all together and not have to worry about it. But common sense took over and I decided that was to much work to do. Going to wait until first light and try to get it out. I am ready to get this little project over with, it shouldn't take this damn long.

Couldn't you roll the buggy on its side and fill it through the drain hole? I haven't tried this but it sounds like it could get you running for the weekend. Then worry about getting the fill plug out next week.

Doesn't apply in your case WK, but guys, make sure you can get the fill plug out before you drain your transmission.
It would suck having the tranny drained and no way to refill it........... :wink:

I welded a grade 8 - 17mm bolt on the end of a piece of 1/4" thick x 1' wide by 24" long flat stock for the stuborn plugs. Works every time.

I did the bolt welded to an old wrench trick, i had a 6 rib with some home built mounts and coudnt get the allen socket in there and its cool to make you own tools. :D

I was at NAPA and just bought another Allen wrench that had the swivel head on it. Worked and I am ready to ride sometime soon. Fighting the flu right now it sucks.
