It looks like my Sway a Way 19 1/4" axles is rubbing a hole in my flange seal. 3 rib to sedan stubs that been converted to fit 930 cv. 930 cv at both ends. Axle has clips at both ends. Axle has a lot of inward and outward movement thru out suspension cycle. No binds. It seems like the axle hits the cup before the clip stops it from hitting. Is this my problem?

all my buggies have done that. could be you have too long axles. are both sides doing it?

Yes both sides are hitting. This one is worst. It fell out when I removed the cv. Maybe that's WHY it's worse. It backed out a little.

All of my buggys do it, i think sometimes the axle wont slip in the cv and then when the suspension flattens out it pushes the seal out. we just silicon it up until the next time

How much lateral movement do you have when the drive and the stub are level?

About 5/8".

I just found an old post in 2011 about this issue. Good info there.
Mike, I think I got my measurements off. I will re-measure when I get the tranny back in.

mine were doing that and I ground about an 1/8 off each end of axle...3x3 with 930s

The CV joints may be wearing or were
intentionally opened up and polished.
Have you considered reversing the
CV joints so that they run in the opposite
directions? It kinda "doubles" the
life of the CV joint?
I would not reverse the rotation
direction of the axles ...as they are
now cold-worked for one direction
only.

They are race prepped. I will switch the inner and outer cv while
I have the tranny out fixing the blown reverse gear. I will also move the washer on the pivit bolt.

Simply moving the cvs from the outer to inner position on the same side will not change the wear pattern, they must be moved to the other side of the tranny.

Hmmmm. I'm thinking that would change the direction. Position your head between wheel and tranny. The mating surface of the cv on the trans side turns clockwise when going forward. Now turn your head and look at the wheel side. The mating surface is turning counter clockwise.

this is what I do. I don't even run seals in them, I just silicone them up.

CVs take wear on one face of the ball hubs only (except when you drive in reverse), so they can be made to run in the opposite direction to extend their life. There are two ways you can accomplish this. Assume you're looking at the back of the van, and the CVs are labeled with letters, like this:

A------B Transmission C------D

You can move the axles so that the letters now read:

C------D Transmission A------B (option 1) OR
D------C Transmission B------A (option 2)

These two configurations will result in the forces being applied to the CVs being reversed. Note, however, that the following configuration will NOT reverse the forces applied to the CV joint rotation:

B------A Transmission D------C
PS... don't change the axles from side to the other side, only the cvs.

Ok. We are talking applied force not direction. That makes sense.

This could explain why many Rzeppa- style
CV joints have polarity marking(s).
Since a CV joint can be flipped-in-place,
there are 2 choices per joint, which makes
for quite a few combinations!

I also noticed I have only 1 pivot washer and it is on the outside...both sides.
