That would require a whole new chassis for mine

If your going with a mid. You could mount the motor and trans 90 run the axle to a diff. Something like a Cobra rear end then you could gear that to fit your needs.

You basically just described Passat's ride...

So I strolled up to Silver Lake MI. last week to take in some dunes, (first time being there), my eyes liked to bugged out of my head when the dude said his trans in his Sand Rail was $22k ! I actually said, "thats gotta be bs". LolImage

Power was a very healthy LS in this green rail. The blue one had an LS with a Whipple supercharger same trans. Image

I believe it! You can almost double that if you want! Check out a class 1 race buggy. They have as much in cv joints as most have in buggies!

Jesus, you could build a bespoke transmission for less than that!

Talked to weddle briefly, sounds like the mendeola is going to be best for mid engine application. The only shifter they have for mid engine and hv1 right now is $1000 from albins, and the gearing is closer for what I need. The weak reverse sure sucks but I haven't broke one since I was a kid starting out!

99' and up Passat is identical to that and they are $75 at pull a part and the cable shifter just bolts to the floor. And the output flanges are identical to type 2 bus. Giant stock flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, starter and slave cyl. Perfect for mid engine.

This thread is making me think that I just wasted $2500 on getting my 6 rib (094) rebuilt.

I just added a "Race Ready" R&P, Weddle Gears, German SuperDiff and a Torsion input shaft.

I was hoping my investment in the trans would last me a season or two...

I called Weddle a couple of days ago and talked to them for about twenty minutes. The guy I am currently using for transmission work also talked to them as well a few weeks ago so they knew my situation. As of right now I plan to build a full Weddle 094 from end to end. At first this rebuild was going to be done because I had very few options because of the limited space I have in the back of the buggy. After my conversation with them I have complete confidence that this box will hold up just fine. The general consensus is I had two worn out transmissions in a row. Overall I sure as hell don't want to change the way I drive and I feel This will solve my problem. I guess the both of us will know soon enough if we chose correctly.

I think you will both be fine. Plenty of other guys on here have been running them for a long time and are happy.
Just to keep the conversation going...

Has anyone else ever seen the "C5 Glide" kit they make for newer drag vettes?

I also felt good when I saw one company's 1000+ hp rear end kit for a vette uses conversion stubs and 930 axles...

That still isn't exactly cheap. But they are advertising it as handling 1200hp and 8 sec 1/4 mile passes...

I believe you can get just the conversion parts for less if you have the rear end and powerglide.

Nice short mid engine solution with plenty of HP...

If you go the Colorado sand cars route you just need a v-drive and a couple custom drive shafts and that staggered rear end. Then pick a drivetrain and go...

By the time you've gone that far you may as well put the front diff in.

One of these. Powerglide to a C5 diff. Chad

I'm considering a powerglide with a gto differential.

Also considering a th400.

Pros and cons anyone have any insight on these?

I had my first experience with the new HV1 in the trails at Haspin.

The steep first gear is amazing. It will engine brake down hills at low speed. I can hill start my buggy on ANY grade. Clutch never even felt stressed one time. It also let's me stay engaged almost all the time which helps tremendously as well.

The locker is a bit more of a learning curve when the hills are slick but I will get the hang of it. If you lose momentum and start spinning too much it will walk you right off the side of the trail.

In the soupy stuff it is awesome. Shoots you right straight through.

On the street the locker is a little less enjoyable. It pushes bad in curves now and i have always enjoyed high speed cornering with my buggy. I am really considering seeing if they can set me up with an air or electric locker instead. It uses an off the shelf powertrax unit so maybe I can go that route instead.
