My dad was going to use it on his mid engine sand car but the build has been delayed. He is going to run the turbo ecotec.

Just seen this mid turbo ecotec on fb. Anyone know what he is running? It's an auto looks bad ass.

Gotta be something pretty salty to fit in that small of a space and be an auto... Transaxle engineering fields 3 speed maybe... I talked to them too. $14k for that trans. I like the cantilever rear suspension.

I have talked to the Subaru guys a few times and they never seem very confident in our type of riding.

I always get comments like, "wow 35 inche tires, those are big tires" Or.. "I am not sure how thr trans will work climbing hills"

I have searched and searched and even asked Subaru gears and I have not found anyone running a Subaru Trans for the type of riding we do

The first gear in the subaru is comparable to vw with the steeper r&p option they make now so it would climb the hill, but you are back to whether or not the r&p can handle the big tires... My guess is no... or at least no better than a vw trans.

Yes I've all but ruled out the suby trans after some research, looks like mendeola or one of the HV trans

From the little I know about the mendeolas from racing, unless your buying the middle or big one, I would go with the Weddle trans (HV).

Correct if I'm wrong ,but was the HV1 developed to solve the problems the mendeola had

I believe so, or at least to compete against it.

Louis Travis and Troy Van Winkle have been running the setup I'm talking about with mendys and believe they've had good luck, I think Louis now runs automatic ,not for sure which one

I was told the cheaper Mendeolas are all forward HP and have a glass reverse like a nose shift vw.

Troy's buggy had a Mendeola when I saw it last. I believe the sequential shift one. That has a good reverse and is also in the neighborhood of $12-14k...

I found almost nothing bad to say about the HV1 online and when I did it was guys stadium racing and pushing it to its hp limit

I think Louis told me that Troys is the 2d, I really need to make a call. But yes the hvs are looking like the all around tranny

Isn't that when everything breaks! LOL

Post subject:  Re: HV1, Mendeola, supra glide, Continued....

Also noted the HV2 has a max r&p size of 5.42 and a max first size gear of 3.11

My bus trans was 4.56 with a 3.44 first which ends up very close to the same gearing. If you want any steeper first gear you have to stay at the HV1.

Weddle basically said no one with money for that trans is going slow..... hahahaha

I am tired of hot clutches and not being able to hill start. So I set mine up like a granny gear 4 speed pickup. Crawler 1st for the trails so I am almost always off the clutch and a wide ratio 3 speed for the street. Basically 2nd is now a hair faster than the first in my bus trans was and so on. I just have to run my gears longer. It won't win any drag races with that gearing but it will be fine by me.

For the guys who play with weddle's calculator. ..

I got a 6.14 R&P with a richmond power Trax locker

1st. 3.75
2nd. 2.25
3rd. 1.39
4th. .82

First will be almost 24:1 with a locker.....

A nice comfy 4 mph at 1000 rpm and all the torque I need.

Now I can climb a steep hill and see a sharp rock and think... "I'll slow down a bit so I don't tear a tire or gouge a beadlock" ...

Or if it's all clear I will hit it in second (my old first) and go fast like Ricky Bobby...

So the $14000 trans is out of the question. What is wrong with the stock Cobalt Ecotec/ manual trans. configuration with A frame rear suspension? Nobody said the engine needs to be inline unless using a VW style transaxle and buggies are being built with the engine sitting sideways. An HHR SS 2.0 turbo with the factory upgrade MAF and retune makes almost 300 hp and Chevy still honored the warranty so they must be pretty confident in the transmissions.

It will limit your axle length on one side (overall wheel travel) since the trans is off center. Other than that it would work fine.

This thread is making me think that I just wasted $2500 on getting my 6 rib (094) rebuilt.

I just added a "Race Ready" R&P, Weddle Gears, German SuperDiff and a Torsion input shaft.

I was hoping my investment in the trans would last me a season or two...

The answer to this story is ...off roading isnt cheap. Pour money in to a engine to double the h.p. or buy a cheaper engine and pour money into a transaxle . Either way it gonna cost ya .

Mickey Mouse, I don't think you wasted money at all. I built my 091 because at the time no one was .

I think the 094 is a great trans. I just made a commitment to myself the last time I had trans issues that next time the last VW part was leaving my buggy and taking Hitler's curse with it...

I left "building 094 ' s" off the end of the first paragraph.

If you use the cobalt trans ,wouldn't it be geared way to high with the big tires we are going to run

Post subject:  Re: HV1, Mendeola, supra glide, Continued....

The answer is yes, final drive ratios will be limited because unlike VW I don't think the GM trans have hit the million plus units like VW and created an aftermarket of parts. The initial question is how can we
get the 300hp. that is now realistic via Ecotec to the ground through an affordable transmission? I was hoping the Subaru trans was a realistic answer but sounds like they are balking when asked point blank. Back to the idea of the GM manual trans supporting the horsepower I'm inclined that the horsepower may power through a higher gear ratio. I'm getting some good blood flow to build a new buggy to find out.

If your going with a mid. You could mount the motor and trans 90 run the axle to a diff. Something like a Cobra rear end then you could gear that to fit your needs.
