Figured we would get this conversation off of Bryan's build thread and on its own.

I did alot of research to end up where I did. The HV1 is as beefy as I can get without reinventing the entire wheel which isnt gonna happen for another few years.

I also like Colorado sand cars approach. V8 with auto backwards feeding a 1.5:1 v drive from a boat. Then back to your choice of axle and suspension setups. Kartek is selling a 9" center section with 930 or 934 cv's for Ultra 4. You can get them set up with standard or reverse r&p also.

I may be wrong but I had the understanding that the supra ,glide setup put the weight to far forward and you had to use bolts in the tires for the traction . That's why I was leaning the other direction

Makes for a long wheelbase too...

Passat, what trans are you using and what engine?

Passat is using the FWD 5 speed trans that came with his motor only sideways with a welded diff and one custom half shaft running to Lincoln IRS center section. Did I miss any parts passat?

How would you ever turn it with the diff welded

The spider gears are welded in the passat trans axle . If not the side not bolted to anything would turn and it would not move

I'm not up on it ,so does that mean they are locked and both wheels turn at the same rate?

Permanently... all the time... In most situations it breaks more than it fixes. But in his case it just solves a problem. Plus he has (2) 3 series ring and pinions which is way stronger than one 7 series r&p.

Haven't you ever wondered how every demo derby car ever has a posi? 8-)

The Passat is the stock car trans and is welded so his half shaft will spin the lincoln irs differential which I don't think is welded so both tires won't spin.

There is I diff in his auto trans. He welded THAT diff. He then ran a shaft from the trans to a conventional rear drive differential that the diff is NOT welded.

Could you use a Subaru transaxle pointed in its original direction but in the back of a buggy for a mid engine set-up?

I worry about my 094 constantly but knock on wood :D my used 094 is still hanging on after 5 years behind my heavy Ecotec buggy. the current summer included with said ecotec turbocharged. that includes one day at the dragstrip. I actually bought 2 094s. 1st one had a pinion bearing screaming and the second one wouldn't stay in fourth gear. :x I took the best parts from both and bought a superdiff and put it all together. so far so good.

I may be wrong but i think the Lincoln rear end is a stock open rear end so the cutters will work . You would have to weld the diff in the passat trans axle because he had the drive shaft bolted between one of the axle joint cups and the input shaft of the Lincoln diff .

If you left the passat diff open it would just spin the axle joint cup on the opposite side with no axle bolted to it

I see now, I didn't realize he had the conventional diff also, I don't know a lot about the suby transmission but my plan is to run these 40 inch tractor tires so I have to have a pretty healthy tranny

Does anyone remember what Phillip is running?

Renault UN5 box - basically a UN1 like the GT40 guys run but with a bigger CW&P and 4-spider diff as standard.

Pretty easy conversion from an 091 as the centre width ends up similar so you can use the same length shafts, etc. Renault throwout bearing works with the 180mm clutch and the clutch arm got adapted to work with the original cable with little issue.

Edit: about clearest pic I have for rough size:

The subaru trans should work. go to www.subarugears.com. they are nice people to talk to. tell them what you are doing and I am sure they can come up with something for you.

How things have changed, for years we put everything into our motors and enough in our tranny's to get buy and now its just the opposite
