Post subject:  VW Syncro transmissions

I am looking for a donor or purchase VW syncro transmission or core.
I would like to post any and all pictures for offroad-only applications
right here on this website.
I will discuss the differences and the similarities of the 094 to other
bus and Vanagon transmissions.
I will also discuss how to modify a bus or vanagon transmission to
fit in a rail buggy for 4WD/ AWD (if you don't mind a live drive
shaft running up the middle of your buggy). I would suggest that
you enclose the live driveshaft!

I have seen the 094 used a couple of ways. Not sure what is correct.

I have seen a lot of people call a side shift 6 rib an 094 and I have also seen people call the Vanagon Syncro transmission with the drive shaft coming out the front an 094.

unless you have a motor sitting on the front wheels don't go 4x4. Wheels in the air are useless. Back down a hill with front brakes and see if they have ANY grip. Will not double wide rear tires do as good? People sometimes ask me about the Passat. "D, Why don't you take advantage of that spinning output flange (exact fit as a bus c/v) under your rt elbow between the seats? "I reply, I just ain't that enthused about it. I'm not going to run around the woods with 37's on the front, plus extra spinning weight of axles and diffs.

I completely disagree. I think a four-wheel-drive buggy would kick ass. You'll need to keep the weight down and gear appropriately to have smaller tires in the front but the extra traction would help significantly

The reason I asked about them is because I don't know anything about 094's.
I like to learn and I like options.

Are all 094's built for 4WD or are some 2WD ??
Are they just a 6 rib with two output shafts ??
In stock form are they any stronger than other transaxles ??

On big hills I don't know if it would help unless u were front heavy 40/60.
I can see it helping in swamps and small hills if the buggy was more traditionally
balanced to maybe help keep the front end climbing up on top of the mud/sand and
not having to plow thru it.
I don't know cause I haven't tried it. its all just guess work.

Some of the vw transmission parts vendors are calling the water-cooled rear engine
vanagon (and syncros) "094". Others call the 2wd transmission 091-1 and the
4wd "094".
The 1st 091-1 is a 6 rib 091 with the shifter moved to the side of the nose. The 2nd
091-1 water-cooled moved the shifter to the side of the case and moved reverse
gear all of the way forward.
Syncro is the 2nd 091-1 with a long pinion shaft and a boss for a locker, which gives
the case a new part number that starts with "094".

Check out a British site www.partsemporium.co.uk , then click type 25 gearbox codes, which is a vanogon, Type 2 is an older bus. British write their dates like today's date 1.23.15 :P
