My clutch burnt up today and I was thinking about getting a 4 puck but im running bus inners and car outers so would a 4 puck have to much grab and break the car outers?

I ran a 4 puck for a short while in the woods I hated it you can't feather the clutch when you need to it's either in or out I'm running a 6 puck now it's much better but may go back to a cushlock when this one is done the big thing is the pressure plate IMO

My brother runs one and he seems to like it. I was just afraid of having to change cvs all the time:| but I may try it out.

The best part about a 4 puc is that a stock press plate is just rite for grip and comfort. Heavy pressure plates require heavy foot pressure and that wears out the thrust cut on stock magnesium blocks AND the thrust surface on the main bearing. Those new blocks are hard aluminum verses soft magnesium stock blocks. You'll get excessive end play with a lot of clutch pedal action with a heavy pressure plate thru the years. Just my guess , but when a crank moves, say 10 thousandths fwd, would not that move the brass timing gear 10Kths fwd and rotate the distributor drive say 10Kths, thus play games with ignition points? Adjust points from 16Kths to 6 or 26 and see if it don't run bad! I'm open for discussion. Basiclly I can see where a crank floating back and forth can play mi-nute games with perfect timing. Maybe the diagonal cut cam gears keep the crank steady to the rear until you let off the gas.

X2 if you have a stock Vw motor. I have run a 4 puck with a stock pressure plate for 15 years. Never had any trouble and you can still slip it a bit.

Passatt I agree with you on that ,we ran stage 4 pressure plates with stock clutch for years and Morgan still runs it now to hold a 2500 with 2nd gear , but it wears out that thrust bearing prematurely. I dont like the way a puck clutch releases but it may be a better setup with a lighter plate

Dang ruff crowd sounds like I'm the only non 4 puck guy around but for part 2 of your question sedan outers should live angles will kill them those not so much the snap of a slamming all your rotating parts into motion lol I just had to throw that in for the fun of it

Oboy. here comes 2 cents from Passat. AKA Passit. lol.Since I went stock Vanogon clutch (228 mm)with springs in the middle, I can't remember breaking any trans since. Hi jacking my own thread, these IMI starters. Put a dab of RTV on exposed battery cable copper strands (On a dry day!, don't lock in moisture). Dry strands suck in rain or splashed water like a dry sponge. The water sits in the swedged terminals or down in the cable plastic coating and corrodes (green copper and white powder). As months go by, you crank the motor and it turns over slower because of the low voltage trying to pass thru with a big demand. Sure the cable is over heating and smoking, but don't stand there and think that your copper wire windings in the starter and the solenoid copper contacts, aren't. The entire circuit is getting hot! And remember. For strong power for starters you need fatter cables the further your battery is away. And go with the highest cold cranking amp battery. Amps are like money in the bank verses living paycheck to paycheck. Drawing down a battery repeatedly, shortens the life as well. And don't move yer buggy with the starter either! And don't use your trans for brakes unless it's an emergency. And if you see me out in the woods, loan me some money. The best way to test someone's friend ship is, borrow some money from them and do not pay them back...And if they get all puffy about it... You did not need them as a friend no way! :P

Hmm, I am running a stock clutch with a stage 3 pressure plate on a 2332. Wondering if I will end up with the premature wear myself, the clutch pedal definitely takes some effort. Last time the motor was rebuilt I don't think there was any issues with the thrust, but it didn't have much time on it before it blew.

I found out real quick one day running a stock clutch with a stock pressure plate doesn't work well. Smoked the clutch in about 5 minutes, buggy wouldn't pull itself on a moderate hill.

Ive ran a 4 puck with stage 1 plate for years with no issues.. against a mild 2165 for several years and now against a healthy 2275 w/ stock six rib and 36" buckshots...
