I have recently acquired a vanagon 5 speed transmission which came from a German van with 1.6 Turbo Diesel. The code is AAS which means it has 40% limited slip Differential (LSD). I able to verify this because the bell housing is off the trans.

Does anyone have experience with these? How would the LSD do in a offroad buggy?

WOW! I THINK IT WOULD BE AWESOME! I put a 5 speed in Austin's buggy back in '05. I have several more. Put a 3/16" inch plate between the bell housing and trans and let it attach to the wish bone. It will also prevent case flex. No thicker than 3/16" because you loose space on the 2 dowel pegs.

A 5 speed would be interesting.. here are the gear ratios for the AAS

4,11 - 1st
2,33 - 2nd
1,48 - 3rd
1,02 - 4th
0,82 - 5th

Yep, I looked up the ratios and found out that the 1st gear is about the same as a 3 rib, taking the ring and pinions (R/P) into account. It has a 4.83 R/P, For that reason I think I will only use it if I ever build a big motor because I don't have a problem with a stock motor and a 3 rib. Trying to remember how to post picture now.

I can tell you that the limited slip will leave all your buddies envious when you climb a muddy, rutted, or severely off camber hill... Really it will leave them envious in just about every situation but one... Kiss doing tight cutter brake turns goodbye... If you are a person who LOVES your cutter brake then I would avoid the LSD. It will slip if you aren't on the gas. If you are it's "Hold on and make sure you are pointed where you want to go"...

My math came out to 523:1 in 1st. Watch out for your exaust bumping your rear cage cuz the 5 speed is something like 2 3/4" longer than a 538. The axle flanges will be slightly offset to the rear of 3x3 stub axles (1/2") . Austin ran his with a 483 from '05-2011, rode hard and every weekend on thru the winters and summers with a 2275. Busted the ring and pinion. Too many do-nuts with the cut brake. He now has a 486 5 speed with the same gears as Mickey mentioned (eqiv. to a 429). There needs to be about 5 inches of height between the ribs and the gas tank for my crafty shifter design. But the last side shift I made used the van crooked shifter pole( No gas tank gap needed). Knock the roll pin out of the shaft with the cup and rotate it 180 degrees and put the pin back in. Now invert the ball on the trans. Now run the crooked pole (now in your favor) thru a homemade plate attached to the nose and on out between the 2 seats. The end can now run thru an upside down stock vw piston rod. Fab a handle with a bicycle handle bar grip and boom yer done. You can only do this method if your seats are moved out about 9 inches from your torsion tube. Or your passenger seat is notched out. It will have the shorter throw than the 1st design. Get a friend stationed over seas Military to call the junk yards around the world and he can ship them thru his channels. Or go to Canada or Mexico. UPS wanted $600 to ship from the U.K. wow!

4.11:1 first gear times 4.83:1 ring and pinion = 19.85:1 overall in 1st gear, right? Or am I thinking wrong?

1985 verses 2044 for a 538. (380 1st x 538) I think a 483-5 speed is like a 526 and a 486-5 speed would be a 529. The best thing is that they will last a looong time. Case flexing will be reduced with the plate between the bell housing and trans and it will be perfectly aligned with the wish bone large bolts. Cut a big hole so the ring gear and input shaft can fit. Use the bell housing for a template. Austin's 486-5 sp. is just rite for roasting his 38"s.

My son Austin. It is a 92x82 . It may be a 2180. But it is high comp/dual carb. Plenty of power for Leeds, Al.

Just wondering because I didn't think a plate between the bell and Trans would be necessary for a Vw motor but I guess it doesn't hurt.

You don't. But it is the best way to mount it. B4 he went to side shift 5 speeds in '05, he had a pile of busted nose shifts.

Yeah, I was planning on going side shift If and when I put my stroker back together but I really wanted a five speed ever since I saw one of your post about it. I have too busted 6 rib nose shifts and a bunch of parts also. I'd just about given up on finding one when I ran into this one the other day on craigs. I found importers before but there's no way I was paying 1200 for a tranny. This one needs rebuilt according to the previous owner, he said he though he remembered it popping out of third gear. Hopefully I can fix that without too much expense.

I have a pile of 4 and 5 speed side shifts that aren't all that. But I do not have the experience to rebuild them.
