Post subject: | vanagon auto Trans with no cooling? |
I just got a buggy that had a 3 speed auto vanagon trans but had no way to cool it. I took the buggy out this past weekend and when I got to the top of some long hills the trans started to slip. I felt the trans and it was HOT. I did some research and found that there is a way to hook up an oil cooler the original oil/water cooler part of the trans. The part that confused me is that the trans that I have does not have thoes ports in it. I am left puzzled on what I could do to add an oil cooler to this trans. As it really needs it. Here is a link to a pic of the trans. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll70 ... 161844.jpg |

The aircooled bus had no cooling provision other than air passing over the tranny. You could add ports to the pan and use a pump and oil cooler though. |

so just use 2 ports ,an in and an out, in the pan? would that still circulate the cooled fluid though the tranny? |

Using a pump to circulate the pan fluild through an oil cooler will cool it down. Yes |

On the vans people would fashion a scoop out of sheet metal to direct more air over the tranny, but that wouldn't work in a buggy. It probably slipped because it boiled the trans fluid. |

Would that destroy the fluid? even though the trans is cooled down it still seems to slip. it goes into Park Drive Rev.. fine and moves but it seems when i mash on the throttle it slips instead of grabbin |
