Hey Eggman,

The BEST way to go for the long term is to get rid of both trannies and get a 6 rib from an 84 up Vanagon. (Like Maddog runs.) This is a very strong trans and somewhat affordable. The other alternative is spending thousands on a trans that has Weddle gears and all the goodies inside.

Ok. Picked up the 094 last night from the 86 Vanagon. What a chore it was with the rain and wind we have been having. The donor vehicle had 120K on it. Got the shift tube and shift assy, the hydraulic cylinder, starter, and both axle shaft assemblies. Now to power wash the nastiness off of it so I can start figuring out how to install it into the buggy.

Any good pics on anyone's buggy builds to help with it? I now understand about the side shift and how it works. Wasn't quite sure how the shift shaft with the u-joints worked, but after laying under the donor and seeing how the shifting worked it all came clear to me. Also understand about the hydraulic clutch now. Although, does the slave cylinder push down to disengage the clutch or pull up?

I'll snap a few pics of it once I get done cleaning it up. I think I once read that easy-off works really well on nasty grease. Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone for your help.

You haven't found the code yet.
Get you putty knife out and start scrapping the crud off of the main case, the numbers are stamped into the case, they are not raised casting numbers. There will be 3 letters and the rest numbers. It's in the area where the bottom meets the side of the tranny on the starter side of main case, like in the pic.

I found this on a mid side shift I have. It was on the bottom opposite side of starter. ImageImage

Hey Eggman,

It's easy for us to say "get a 6 rib" but you are the one that has to find one. Sometimes not easy to do in certain parts of the country. Shipping one in to you may be the answer.

Any way you look at it you are going to have to spend some money. If you want my opinion, You kinda were asking which one to fix? Fix the 5 rib. It would be "easier" to fix the 3 rib but that gearing is wrong for a V-6. A 5 rib would be better for your set-up. You MUST install a super diff no matter which way you decide to go. This will help some to make the stock trans stronger and last a little longer. This is especially important with you having V-6 power and 35" tires.

Reverse gear for a five rib is only for a five rib, it may be hard to find. Chuck Jones can probably get you one.

Huey is right, the code is opposite the starter side.
The single side plate [superbeetle trans] reverse will work as a replacement in the 5rib, we've used it many times as a replacement.

I think it is wider as well , on the car trans reverse . Is that right maddog?

The small reverse gear in the 5 rib and super beetle are 15 tooth [stronger], most of the 3 ribs were 17 tooth [weaker].

I think this is the number that I have been looking for.

DC 03 08 3

Although the DC could be a DU. Hard to say for sure. I'll bet there isn't any other way to tell if the tranny has 2 or 4 spider gears with out busting the side plate off?

Take the bell housing off and look at the diff

Auto Zone has side shift slave cylinders for 29.95 . Look up www.partsemporium.co.uk, then type 25 gear box codes. 25 means vanogon and gear box is trans. DU is what you are looking for.

No superdiff but you got the desirable 4.86 ring and pinion.

Get a 4 spider diff and it will last for a while. You will love the 4.86 gear with your combination. I use a 5 rib with a 4.86 in my buggy and it's a great gear.

Cool, can't wait too get it put in. Currently sizing up the location of the trans and redoing some of the previous tubing work. Heading out now to cut the mounting brackets on the plasma table.

I do have a couple more questions. How does the clutch lever come off? I have removed the snap ring, and did a little prying under the lever, but it didn't move. Is there a seal or a bearing under it that would prevent me from heating it up and getting it off? Is this the time that I should make an 1/8" plate to go between the bell housing and the main body? Or can it wait until I get the super diff? Do I need to get longer locater pins for it?

Thanks again for everyone's help!!

It'll wait spider gears will go 1st.
If you should break the spider gears don't try and make it go or pull the buggy without removing axles.
Bits from the spider gears will ruin your R&P.

if your plan is to move that throw out bearing arm, I'm pretty sure you cant. thats why I used a nose cone bell on my 094.

From a 3 rib or a 5 rib? Any need to change the input shaft?

Author:  RaceBugg1098 [ Thu May 22, 2014 3:47 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 3 or 5 rib?

if you use a 3 or 5 rib you will need to trim about 3/8" off the clutch end of the input shaft. I used a regular 6 rib bellhousing and didnt have to cut it down at all.

Author:  eggman [ Thu May 22, 2014 10:24 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 3 or 5 rib?

So if I use a 5 rib bell housing on a 6 rib trans, trimming is required on the input shaft? The reason I am making sure is I am wondering if I can weld a new clutch lever at a right angle on top of the horizontal one that is there with out messing up the clutch throw out shaft. If I can weld a new lever to the one that is there, I won't have to change bell housings.

Does that make sense?

Thanks again.
