Currently have a 3 rib in my buggy making a loud clunking noise. Without the cv joints in it. I can take the out put flanges and spin them in the same or different directions and they will solidly lock up. Let up just a little bit and then I can spin them again.

Here is the scoup. I have a 2.8L chevy v6, 35" mud terrains, with a clunking 3 rib. I also have a 5 rib with reverse out of it in the shed. Which is better for trail riding and minor hill climbing? Which would I be farther ahead to fix?

Thanks in advance.

Also, where is the best deal on trans parts? What parts would one improve upon to make the 5 rib last longer with my v6 on it?

Thanks.

By the time you spend the money to fix the 5 rib you might be better off just getting a 6 rib.

If you want to increase the strength of the trans, you can add a super diff.

I understand that the 6 rib is the best. However, I have a 5 rib and a 3 rib...those are my options. I've looked around here for in St Louis yards for a 6 rib but no luck.

save up and get a 6 rib. with the tires and weight your running, your just throwing money in a hole! Either way you go, get a super diff. $ now or $ later

If I have read your earlier post correctly, you have a Broken 3 rib and a Broken 5 rib. You will need to spend money either way. I think you are better off running a stock 6 rib than fixing the 5 rib.

Ok, if that is the case I need, where do I find one? The St Louis market is tapped out.

You really need a built trans or at least one with a super diff. I think passat has one on here for sale. With that motor and that size tire a stock trans won't last if your hard on it at all. If that's a motor and buggie you plan to keep and ride a lot then you need to start looking for different options. You could build the crap out of that 5&3 rib but since your going to have to build one I'd look for a 6 rib already built or even buy a 6 and build it jmo. Try thesamba.com or check with Eric Debord, chuck jones, Danny McCalvin. They are out there not cheap but buy once and cry once. Chad

I'm thinking the 5&6 are pretty much the same strength, the 5 has a slightly narrower 1st gear and reverse, but 1st and reverse are the same as the single side plate "super beetle" 1st gear and reverse.
That being said the main shaft and 1st gear can be found pretty easily if you should break 1st, from the super beetle car tranny.
Plus the 5rib has a more desirable r&p 4.86.
Of course if it were mine, I use the 84 and up vanagon tranny with a 4,86 r&p.
I have one buggy with a 3.1 V6 and a 5rib, all weedle inside that I've never broken and I've broke plenty of others.
Without a 4 spider german diff it won't last long.
Be sure to use weedle's racing reverse "small gear" and set it deeper for full tooth contact.

Oh, sounds like your diff is busted in your 3rib.
So, when you get your superdiff you can fix your 3rib with the diff from the 5rib.

Hey Eggman,

It's easy for us to say "get a 6 rib" but you are the one that has to find one. Sometimes not easy to do in certain parts of the country. Shipping one in to you may be the answer.
_____________________________________________________________________

Any way you look at it you are going to have to spend some money. If you want my opinion, You kinda were asking which one to fix? Fix the 5 rib. It would be "easier" to fix the 3 rib but that gearing is wrong for a V-6. A 5 rib would be better for your set-up. You MUST install a super diff no matter which way you decide to go. This will help some to make the stock trans stronger and last a little longer. This is especially important with you having V-6 power and 35" tires.

The BEST way to go for the long term is to get rid of both trannies and get a 6 rib from an 84 up Vanagon. (Like Maddog runs.) This is a very strong trans and somewhat affordable. The other alternative is spending thousands on a trans that has Weddle gears and all the goodies inside.

So what year of vanagons other than 84? Would a trans from a diesel vanagon work?

Update---Found a manual transaxle from an 86 vanagon. Pick it up Thursday. Thanks for the help on this. Will probably have more questions on the 6 rib.

you will need to make or buy a linkage for it, and still need a super diff (as long as the one your getting doesnt already have one)

I was thinking it would be a side shift. Looking now for some pics of the side shift linkage.

Can I still use my same bus axle shafts that I used with the 3 and 5 ribs?

axles will be the same. You can use your bellhousing and starter off your old trans too.

From what I have gathered, the 094 is about 3/4 - 1" longer than the 3,5,6 ribs. Would this measurement change if I reused either the 3/5 rib bell housing? Or, could I use the 094 bell housing and have to use the 094 starter to make it work or will the 094 starter not make it to the flywheel?

The side shift linkage looks easy enough to make. Might be something to try the cnc plasma cutter on. IF not, Big Scott will get a pm.

Thanks.

Look up westy ventures they make a adapter for a vw diesel starter to the 094 bell housing. Stick with the 094 bell housing.

The length difference is in the intermediate housing, if you use your 5 or 3rib bellhousing your old starter will work.
You might be lucky with that 86, look for "ACW" in the area in the attached photo. ACW= 4 spider diff inside. This is a car tranny but the code is in that general area, bottom corner starter side of main housing.

Your clutch cylinder will not work on th e 094 bell housing. If you can get away with using the one thats on it, you will be fine.

So...what you are telling me is I need a hydraulic clutch setup instead of a regular clutch cable setup?
