 Post subject: 6 rib build opnions?

i have a 6 rib that will not go into gear just pops at the flanges not sure whats wrong with it was thinking about tearing it apart but have never done one before wondering if its simple also wanting to build it so its stronger wanting to know what is best parts to build with for money wanting stronger fist secound and reverse and maybe stronger dif? running a 2.2 subaru this will be third tranny within 2 years first tranny reverse went now this one im not sure just wanting good reliable tranny cause 6 ribs are not cheap to come buy thx ahead for all info

If you want a reliable Trans.. I would call Chuck Jones.. You will know that you have a correctly built trans and he can usually rebuild your trans cheaper than you can buy the gears.

go to a vanagon side shift trans the 6rib no matter what you do rev is still weak i all so run a 2.2 with some cam work i have a 85/86 vanagon with a super diff and love it been in there for 6 years and no problems

Pop the bellhousing and check, the spider gears are generally the weakest point, 1st to break.

Unless you have a source to borrow the specialty tools it's cheaper to have it done. If the pinion bearing needs replaced it requires 2 real special tools. Just sayin! :wink:

the only 6 rib r&p's ive seen broke were due another to another failure such as a bad bearing, stripped/loose pinion nut, or broken carrier
