Post subject:  pros/cons of swapping 3 rib for 5 or 6 rib??

Now that i've finally got a decent running motor in my buggy and started getting a little more serious with it i've been thinking of going with a 5 or 6 rib. I've got some buddies that have similiar setup as mine and swapped out their 3 ribs for 5 ribs. Whats pros/cons to stepping up to a 5 or 6 besides being a stronger trans? As it is now my 3 rib (running 31x15.50 tires) is very low gear in 1st and seems a little too high geared in 2nd to do any climbing. I do not know specs of the 3 rib I'm running. I'm thinking it's an 002 but how do i identify which 3 rib I've got? Thanks guys

3 and 5 rib are 002.. 1st thru 4th gears are all the same, jus the RnP is different. 6 rib is 091.. the difference is an 091 has wider gears (hence the longer case)

all the parts in a 3 and 5 rib are interchangable

5 rib (4.86 RnP) is a good trans IMO.. will give you that little bit of speed needed to in first gear to climb
6 rib (4.56 RnP) is the way to go if you plan on building serious power later on down the road

you can pull and 3 rib and drop a 5 rib rite in, but a 6 rib requires a lil modification due to the fact that its about 3/4 in. or so longer than a 002 (3 or 5 rib)

they actually made an 091 3 rib with a 5.42 RnP, believe it came in a diesel.. all the ones i have seen where side shift

i ran a 5 rib for several years against a mild stroker motor and 36" cut buckshots.. the only mod i did to it was install an aftermarket 4 spider gear diff and reverse and it gave me zero issues

* had a buddy with a strong 1835 and 31" v-treads, ran a 3 rib and it was too slow, jus blow the tires out... he came up with a 6 rib and it wouldnt get out of its own way :|.. point being, it takes POWER to run a 6 rib, especially from a dead stop on a hill. he coulda put a 5 rib in it and been good to go

BUT.. depending on budget, you can gear a 6 rib any way you like

A 5 rib actually uses a difrent reverse gear than a 3 rib other than that they are the same. A 5 rib is the best for any AC engine under 2 liters in displacement due to the ring and pinion.

more than likely 5.38.. although some have 5.42 but those are few and far between

i dont know what size your motor is but if its not a big stroker i would go with the 5 rib you will be pleased

I don't know exactly what size motor I've got to tell the truth. I bought a buggy last year and this motor was on it. It's kinda aggravating not knowing what you've got, especially when trying to buy stuff like a carb or trans. My last motor was just a stock 1600 DP with a weber progressive and the one I'm running is a lot stronger. Don't see good enough reason yet to have to pull heads and see what size pistons are in it. I'm planning on putting together a 1915 in a few months anyway so I'll benefit from a 5 rib until then. May have a deal worked out on a 5 rib already,

if I end up with the 5 rib I talked to a guy about earlier I'll have a 3 rib for sale most likely... Or could keep it as a backup in case I scatter the 5 rib

I run a 1915 with dual webers on my buggy and I have a 5 rib in it. It's the perfect ratio for my 31" Firestones verses the power output. The 4.86 ring and pinion is perfect for this combo.

what size webers do you run Roy? I would be interested in the block crank & heads but shipping all that would be ridiculous

So does 1st gear in a 6 rib fall in between 1st and 2nd on a 3 rib ? Just curious because I've been running a 3 rib for years and climb everything in 2nd gear. However, it's nice having the lower 1st gear in the 3 rib to Idle around in rough areas. I've always been nice to the 3 rib by not hammering the buggy until I get to 2nd gear and also try not letting it bounce when under power.

I run 44 Webers but I have them choked down with smaller venturi's. This works very well and it leaves me room to grow later if I build another stroker. I am having so much fun with the 1915 that I will probablly just stay with this combination and save my money.
