Sounds like trouble...If it were me, i would first disconnect shift linkage an check with vise grips directyl on the shift shaft. Then pull motor and check things at that end...Then assume the worst lol

It may be the plastic ball in the nose mechanism. Or reverse gear slipped on the shaft.

does anyone know where i can pick up a 3 rib cheap! lol
i have 2 31x15.50x15 8ply v tread with rims
and 2 3rib tires with wide 5 lug pattern rims
would consider trading for a 3 rib or 6 rib

You get this figured out? I would look at the selector ball in the nose cone. Some were a soft plastic that shatter then no shifting at all.

here is what i found when i took the nose cone off

looks like it just jump out of track on the forks
once i push and pulled the right combination the shifter linkage lined back up.
can you tell me from bottom lever to top which is 1, 2 qnd 3, 4 and reverse.
and does anything look abnormal to any of you.

glad you got it figured out, however ive never seen that problem before but it was definantly "out of whack"

bottom shift rod is 1st-2nd, in=1st, middle=neutral, out=2nd
middle shift rod is revers, in=neutral, out=reverse
top shift rod is 3rd-4th, in=3rd, middle=neutral, out=4th

turn the ball sideways in the selector to where it lines up with "notches" and it will come out so you can get a good look at its condition, kinda hard to tell in the pic but is it metal or plastic?

the selector ball looks to be metal or at least it has a metal sleeve in it.
is there any way to keep from this happening again besides being real easy in reverse?
its a lot of work for just jumping track. but least its not and expensive one!!! that's the good thing about it.
thanks for all the input! guess all i have to do now is put it all back to gather this week. unless there is some trick to keep it from doing this again.

Glad you checked it out. Check you shifter throw, you can adjust it with the shifter slots. It does happen once in a while. While you have it apart see about getting a spacer plate for under the nose cone. It help keep the main shaft bearing from walking around and eating out the housing.

It's called a thrust plate, under $15 from weddle, they also have the steel shift ball for less than $5.
