Yes, that is a locking diff from a Vanagon 4wd syncro, only thing is you're missing the locking ring.
If you have that ring, I'll swap you an original Vanagon 4 spider diff for it, and pay the shipping on both.

Nice find. Get the ring and have the trans case modified to use it. Or buy the center case that already has the set up for it. There is a guy that does the work however his name slips my mine.

Good find!! I don't know how how well a limited slip would work in a buggy. They are hard to find and not cheap

Thas a locking diff not a limited slip. I run a Peloquin Torque Biasing (limited slip) in my Buggy and it works quite well. They are not cheap however worth it to me.

So Dave are you going to make that work for your Buggy?

Only downside of that syncro locker is, when it is locked it is just like having a spool for a diff.
Our problem with them is, when one wheel catches traction and the other does not, the wheel with no traction acts just like a big flywheel.
Example: both wheels spinning at high rpm, one suddenly stops, the inertia of other spinning wheel will break an axle.

It could be a front or rear syncro difflock diff. If you turn the diff slightly, you'll be able to see if it has the supporting pins in all four holes or just two.

The front has 2 spider gears, the rear has 4.

You can't easily add difflock parts to a stock non-difflock case but you can use the Syncro difflock case on a 2WD build. The rest of the parts are interchangeable from 2WD.

One thing about the stock Syncro difflock setup is that they don't engage immediately. The internal parts have to line up before it will go in. As such, you can be lucky an it'll pop in straight away or you'll need to drive a little with the rear wheels turning at different speeds for it to engage.

The same can be said for dis-engaging it. If there is any force against the internal parts... i.e. one rear wheel has more grip than the other and you're turning a corner, it won't dis-engage. You have to remove the load from it before it will come out.

If you try to engage it with wheels spinning, you will break something! I've seen one person sheer the output shaft from the diff by doing this.
