The 5 rib:
1.Has 4.86 r&p ,strongest stock r&p in the 002 series.
2.Need thrust plate, used to better hold mainshaft bearing in place. $12
3.I'd also add a 1/8 in. steel plate between the bellhousing and maincase to help prevent breaking of maincase.
4.Wide flange chromoly pinion nut. $40
5. Torsional input shaft. $168
6.Steel shift ball. $5
7.A real vanagon 4-spider diff. Must have! $350 shipped.
8. Hand pack 1st gear bearings instead of using the caged bearings. $20
9. Add more weld to clutch cross shaft or get a heavy duty one.
If you plan on climbing in 2nd gear, I'd probably put a 5.38 r&p in it, they're usually pretty cheap and easy to find.Refer to # 1.$265
If you could find a 5.42 for the 002,you'd be very lucky, they are very rare. $345
You might want to consider changing 3rd gear also, there will be quiet a difference between 2nd and 3rd when you change to that lower 2nd, especially if you like to drag race.

I just finished rebuilding a 'bama trans that came in a buggy a fella up here got a year or so ago. It is a 6-rib with everything maddog just wrote and a sleaved pinion bore. it HAD a 5.86:1 ring and pinion in it that didn't hold up to the 2387 I sold him, so I put a stock 4.57:1 back in. I had never seen anyone mill down the bellhousing to put in that 1/8" mount instead of welding ears on it. Pretty cool!

No milling required, dowels still fit in bellhousing fine, bolt holes in plate are drilled for close clearance for all bolts and dowels going through it.

six ribs are 4.57:1 the gears are about the same as an 002 as far as their ratio.

Stock 1st gear 3.78,2nd 2.06 same in 5rib,6rib, and most 3ribs.
Some of the early 3ribs had a 3.80 1st gear, but essentially all the bus trannies in the USA have the same 1-4 ratios.
They are some that have like a 4.11 and 2.33 but I believe they were European models only, very rare.
R&P
3rib:5.38 and very few rare 5.42
5rib: 4.86
6rib nose shift: 4.57
6rib: side shift in nosecone or in main case: 4.57,4.83,4.86,5.42,5.50,5.83,and 5.86.
3rib vanagon side in nose shift:5.86
They're probably some very rare like 5.14 used in some industrial applications that vw made.
