Post subject:  5 rib bus trans

I am new to vw's and purchased a old sand toys dune buggy and I have to switch the rear torsion out since it was a swingarm and it was pretty badly bent so I recently purchased a 5 rib bus transaxle and want to know will the stock irs rear axles and all swap out when I put this transaxle in or will I have to buy other axles and so on. I am debating to put a appletree auto custom torsion housing in and just saving my money and putting 3x3 trailing arms in it I have to buy axles an such anyway. Please don't flame me I looked on past post but couldn't find what I need to know.

I run a 5 rib in my buggy and i love it. If you do run the 3x3's you willwant to get the longer axels. Not sure what the actual length is im thinkin its 19 3/4 but not sure.

bus and beetle cv joints and axles are both 33 spline

stock beetle axles are 16 1/4 long
stock bus axles are 18 3/4 long

bus tranny with stock beetle arms require 15 5/8 long axles
bus tranny with 2x3 arms require 18 3/4 long axles
bus tranny with 3x3 arms require 19 1/4 long axles

how bad is the torsion bent?

if it usable you can buy the irs "clips" to weld in and convert the swingaxle to irs a lot easier than changing out the entire torsion

is the extra torsion you have a beetle or bus torsion?

if its bus i would suggest buy a beetle or aftermarket if you have to replace it, the bus torsions are bigger and heavier not to mention the torsion bars in it will be way to stiff for a buggy unless you going air bag, air shock, or coilover shock, hope some of this helps

Well the housing in it now has a pretty bad bent horn and then the housing itself is bent down appro 1 to 2 inches. I was thinking about buying a appletree auto custom housing or a stock vw irs rear housing and swingarms either way using the bus transaxle but really want to know if I use my stock trailing amrs do they make any spacers or anything so I don't have to buy other axles. If I do anyway I'm going to put the 3x3 arms on.
