Im trying to fix a 5 rib and have changed a couple of gears on the main shaft and pinion gear but they all match. The problem i'm having is that when i press on the spring and 4th gear first gear locks up . Its got some thing to do with the pressure from the spring or at least i think it does. Any help would be appreciated thanks .

Sounds like a missing snap ring inside the gear stack somewhere. Double check to make sure something is not missing.

i had one do this a couple months ago. I put a new stock first gear and sync ring on and it kept locking up. What I found was the gear was too wide (from bearing surface to brass ring) so i turned a little off the gear at a time till it quit binding. Don't know if thats the same thing you have going on or not
