Something is VERY wrong in that trans for it to only break the top edge of those teeth off like that. Better take it all the way down and inspect everything real close. |

i would say the backlash was not set right and the pinion was not deep enuff in the ring gear |

I was wondering the same thing. I wonder if the pinion nut loosened up. I was climbing a hill and couldn't get over a rock. I backed up and it was stuck in reverse. Would go about 20' then stall the buggy. I got it to the bottom of the hill and it came out of reverse. I put it in first and it got stuck again, drove it about 1/4 mile and everything went back to normal. |

I've seen bad pinion brg let pinion move in and out 1/4" or better and that would also cause havoc with forward and rev like pop out jam up etc and that would also explain the shallow gear pattern on the ring gear Nice 1 Bill lol |

Time for another rebuild. I can move the pinion 1/4" in and out.

Time for a new case. The bearing should fit in that bore TIGHT. You should actually have to heat the case to make it slide together. |

Ocassionally, it's a good idea to feel for movement in your shifter, while accelerating and then letting off, if the shifter tries to move by itself, it's an indication of imminent pinion bearing or nut failure. |

The nut came loose. It took no effort to loosen it. I don't have my book but isn't the nut supposed to be torqued to 198# or something? Also I tightened the nut to at least 100# and the pinion still moves. The nut and bearing don't move just the pinion. |

After you remove the pinion and bearing, check for pinion bearing fit in the case, I'd bet that pinion bearing spun in the case. I usually check pinion bearings by clamping them in a vise, and if I can feel any pinion shaft movement from side to side at all, it gets replaced. Also I prefer good used german bearing over a new fag brazil one. I torque them to around 200# and always use blue locktite. |

do NOT buy FAG bearings. They are part of the group I work for, they are junk. When I worked at Timken I used to test them. JUNK. |
