 Post subject: Transmission Types?

Hi all, I'm building my first buggy and sort of stumped here. The frame is set up for IRS and I have another running buggy that is swing arm. I was going to use the motor and tranny from the swing arm buggy in the one I'm building, but what I'm reading is that there is a dedicated "IRS" transmission.
Do I have to have a specific tranny for IRS or will the Beetle tranny work in my IRS frame?
Also, what is the difference between the two? Basically, is there a way to make mine an IRS tranny?

You should be able to pick up an IRS beetle tranny for $50 or so. Not worth the trouble to do any conversions.

I've found a couple of 3 ribs, I just wasn't sure if there was a swing axle bus trans and an IRS bus trans. Are all bus trans IRS?
I've found several pictures for refrence, but they just say "3rib", "Bus" or "IRS" I wasn't sure if they were all the same and I couldn't tell by the pics.
I been reading online articles on building buggys and they all assume you know about VW drive trains before you build.
I think I may just go with a small block Chevy and Muncie 4 speed, I know those from building Camaros. LOL

if it is irs it will have a cv joint on with 6 bolts and a boot on both ends of the axle regardless if its car or bus and a swingaxle will have a tube from the tranny to the wheel with axle inside and stays connected at the tranny

all buss trans are irs 3 rib 5rib and 6rib its all real simple if you can work on modern cars you can figure this out stick with the vw parts you wont like going any other direction it fails most the time and is a huge letdown in the woods as far as trans goes 3 rib is the cheapest 5rib second and 6rib cost the most also 6rib is the strongest but not needed unless you gonna run big tires or big motor

Thanks Gonzo, I picked that up from my neighbor thinking I was going to just swap the motor, tranny, front end and all over to the rail frame. Oops, lol I didn't know there was a difference between IRS and Swing arm when I bought it.
I'm still gonna use the motor, front end and a lot of the little stuff and then cut the old pan buggy up.

I just picked up an entire IRS rear, transmission and all and the guy threw in 2 new pressure plates, shifter, linkage, throwout bearing and some more stuff for $100. Oh yeah! Deal-O-The-Day

All the stuff from the pan buggy will bolt in to the other buggy. You can run the swingaxle stuff in an IRS frame. All you have to do is change the spring plates and torsion bars.
Is IRS better, yes. Do you have to switch to IRS, no.
