Newb here building a buggy. I recently bought a Beeline Ratpack frame. The guy I bought it off of already had it set up for a Beetle Tranny. He was going to make a street buggy out of it. I want to convert it to a Woods/Backroad buggy.

So I have 2 questions. Will a beetle tranny hold up for some offroad and with v tread tires? Based on what I have read so far I should just go ahead and go to the Bus Tranny. I am not sure what motor I am gonna use but it probably won't be much more than a stock 1600 or 1700.

Also if I would go to a 3 rib IRS bus tranny will it still fit with the same mounts. I can post pictures later if you need to see it.

Thanks

the 3 rib will work perfect with that setup and you need to get the mounting kit and it will fit

Just wondering, do you have an IRS trans now or do you have a Swing Axle? If you have a Swing Axle, you have to change out your torsion housing or add trailing arm mounts before going to a Bus Trans.

If you have the car trans installed, you could use it until it breaks. You will not be able to sell the trans for much so you might as well ride it until it breaks.

Thanks for the info.

I dont have a tranny now. I didn't buy the tranny with the frame because it was a beetle tranny and I wanted to go with a bus tranny.

The frame is setup for IRS and not a swing axle.

I found this and I was wondering if that was all I need to convert it to a bus. http://www.kustom1warehouse.net/Tranny_ ... age143.htm

Part # 9507 is what I have on there now, but I think #3195 is what I need is this correct?

Thanks.

You may need to make your shift rod adjustable by cutting it and welding nuts for a piece of althread if it's not already done.

I got the mount kit for a bus tranny but it seems to be missing some holes.

Do you all usually have to drill holes and add to them to make them work?

Hmmmm.. I have never had to drill any holes? What does not line up? The front mount or the back mount?

The rear mount.

The other mount that I have has the holes for the horn supports and this new mount does not.

That is strange.. It should have holes for the horns or the rear mount bolts to the existing Type1 mount but that is not what your original pics shows..

Yeah maybe that is what it does. I don't have my transmission yet so it's hard for me to tell. I just know that there isn't enough holes in the bus adapter for my horns, transmission and cage to bolt too. Maybe if I could see a picture of how everyone else is doing it I could understand it a little more.

I will see if that adapter will mount to my type 1 mount.

sucks being a noob. lol

I once had a rear mount kit that had two little "L" brackets that bolted into the type 1 bracket. It worked fine but I finally changed it to the one shown above.

The link above takes me to a antenna picture

The mount I had was just a bus trans mount

I have since made my own mount.. I took a plate and made my own with a water jet.

Now when I bolt my transmission in the nose cone is about 3/8 of an inch from the front mount.
When I asked rancho about it he said my frame was probably set up for
A car tranny and I went to a bus. Does the front mount and front of the tranny supposed to touch?

Thanks again for the info

there is a somewhat triangle shaped adapter plate that adapts the 2 vertical bolts on the nose cone of a bus tranny to the 2 horizontal bolts on the car torsion housing and i thinks its made out of about 1/4 plate so that should fill most of your gap up
