Post subject:  WHY BUS TRANNYS?

What makes the bus tranny so appealing? What makes it different than other other transmissions. And is it just the vw bus trannys (venango) or do people run other bus trannys. Thanks.

Because they are much stronger and have gear ratios and R&Ps that work better for offroad applications. And yes typically VW trans are used. You could also use the search feature and find all the Info you need.

Mainly for the good gear ratio's they have. For pulling power and the ability to go on steep terrain without straining the engine so much. Much stronger trans overall compared to a car trans.

Car trannys handle a whole lot more horsepwer though. what did a old vw bus have 100hp not even? Im just trying to understand

No they dont...and there was never a bug with even close to 100hp maybe 60hp . and like Roy said for the gearing .they have a little lower gear and are stronger.

Car trannies only had 60 HP in their best days.
2L bus engines were around 70 and probably weighed twice as much.

I've used some different parts from car trannys in bus trannys.
I know that some of the reverse gears have to be moded or the shifting mechanism swapped.
1.Are the 1 thru 4 and reverse gears interchangeable from 72 and older bus irs with the swing axle and double side plate car tranny?
2.Are the 1 thru 4 and reverse gears interchangeable from the 74 and 75 bus irs with the single side plate car tranny?
I've got it in my head that practically everything is interchangeable between the car and bus, except the case, pinion shaft, ring gear,differential, and shifting mechanisms within the year groups.
