will the diff or spider gears out of a 3 rib work in a 5 rib - I think i blew my spiders out saturday night :cry:

Yes, should be a direct swap. Go with an 091 though if you can....you'll need the side covers too though.

i already have a 3 rib in pieces with a good diff in it - my wallet is a little light for a 091

3 rib and 5 rib diff's will interchange but you can't mis match the innards between the two. I believe the 5 rib carriers have stronger spider gears and those have to be kept with the 5 rib side gears. If you have the whole complete diff out of the 3 rib, just change over the ring gear and install. You will have a weaker overall center section but you will be back on the road.
If you need 5 rib spiders and side gears, I think I have some floating around but they are a couple of $$.
If money is tight, you can make it work easily with what you have.
