does the socket have a retaining ring in it or how does it stay together? I saw that just after I finished building my linkage for the woods buggy and kicked myself... so much simpler.

About 8 years ago(02") I went to the buggy junk yard to search for a side shift item. The owner , Kieth Mitchell said , "Jump in that old bread truck full of side shift cores and find what you need". What a gold mine at the time, it was 5 ft DEEP!. All he wanted was the 4 spyder diffs out of them and the California guy would come by yearly and collect the rest.I bought 1 for a core price and Kieth said"You can't use them on a buggy cause you can't make em shift." I'd been using them for 3 years then! With a crude but practical shifter that my son uses today on his 5 speed. He has ran it flawelessly since (05").But what I'm getting at, Where are they now? I preached the gospel several years ago for people to grab them up but they thought I was an idiot.I can't sell ice water in he!!.

I decided to go with the vanagon tranny in my new build instead of the 091 6 rib because I have had great luck the last 4 years with the one in my old rail. I was thinking I was going to go with the cable shift because I did not have the room for the linkage I bought from Gary at Davis Racing for the old rail. But then I was talking to Ron at weddle and he told me they had a linkage that they were selling that worked great, here are some pics of it. They are selling it for 295.00

Use the trans the way it comes just cut the 2 bottom studs off and make a new front mount and the frame horns stay the same no mods needed i changed the bell houseing to the old on and use the new shifter linkage hook every thing up and you good to go
