I am building a buggy currently (chimpo experiment #2) and had a couple questions. I put the transmission in at a 10 degree angle like I have seen some of race buggies do to keep the bottom of the buggy flat and help the rear finish level with floor or higher. When I did this I lost some length on my axles so I had to set them to run out at less angle. How much back and forth axle play is enough at max angle. Right now at 24 degrees of cv angle the axle has about a 1/4 to 3/8 of play on the axle. That is where I set the shocks to run out but I can always make it less with limit straps. Is this enough end-play??? I have never heard a rule of thumb for this. Also in anyone's opinion will the 1 inch of ground clearance I lost in the middle be worth the extra clearance at the rear? Anything I might be missing that can cause problems? Thanks

1/4 to 3/8" is fine as long as when the arm is level with the drive flange there is at least the same amount of end play. You don't want the axle binding anywhere in the stroke. You need to check it at both ends of the travel and in the middle. Type of CV's and arm size makes no differance.

End play needs to be checked at full droop, full compression and on center. As long as there is end play at all 3 locations you should be good to go. I set them up by lowering the arm untill the end play just dissapears. Rasie the arm up one inch, set the limit strap. Check this a couple of times. Raise it up to center and check end play. raise it up and do the same thing as the bottom end. Set your upper stop.

Mad mike is right. When I set one up, i really only check for end play when the stub and the drive flange are level. 1/4" is plenty there. I know my race buggy doesn't really have any end play at full droop. As long as you can rotate the wheel when you have it off the ground, your fine. i have been running like this for years, and never broken a cv, but my axles never go over 21-22 degrees. Hope that helps!

I checked everything but full compression. I will pull the springs and check later. Thought I was on the right track but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks again.
