Disc are the best,,once you get them on they last a long time. Drums wear out fast and don't stop as well. I used Corolla calipers with Datsun 280z rotors fitted over VW 4 lug hubs cut down to fit in the rotors. I' m sure there are many ways of doing disc. good luck |

Datsun discs like Firebug is describing: ![]() Early 80's Nissan sentra front calipers: ![]() I've used this setup for several years and it works very well, is cheap, and you can buy parts at any part store in the country. |

It is the end of the stub from a datsun....... I machined it down and welded it to a vw stub with the flange gone. ![]() Tranny side ![]() axles ![]() "zig-zag" cased 3.88 tranny The whole setup is pretty much bulletproof if you run stock trailing arms. Sorry for the hijack... |

Yea,,I had a buddy do it on a brake lathe.. then I put studs in it .I redrilled the Z rotors on my drill press so the 4 lug vw studs go through. |

Firebug wrote: What is that tranny They came in late model bugs. 78-79 I think.... The center rib moves over the point where earlier cases break and strengthens them a lot. The rhino cases just add more beef to the center which doesn't stop the crack from forming over close to the side plate. The ring gear tries to "climb" the pinion gear and it causes the case to twist on that side. countri boy 84 wrote: Cool setup never seen that before. Its pretty old school. It works good if you use stock length trailing arms. You can put all the power thru them you want without any trouble from them. 2X3 or 3X3 arms will kill them within a day though. Steve wrote: Any body have a set of these shafts forsale? I have been looking for a set. Most of the time a junk yard will have an old datsun laying around waiting for the crusher. Parts aren't just flying off the shelf for them so you can get them pretty cheap. Good thing is, once you build them, the only thing that you ever would possibly need to change is the U-joints. Either go to Nissan and get the originals to put back or get Spicers. The original Nissan are better than anything you can buy though. |

I used front caliper and rotors off a datsun 280x for my rear disc conversion. I took the 4 lug brake drums, cut the "drum" part off so it was a hub and I still got to use the good german steel. I then took a skim cut off the back of the hub so the rotors would have a flat surface to bolt to. than drilled and tapped accordingly. So in the end the rotors are bolted to the back of the hub and the wheel is on the front of the hub. If anyone cares, let me know and I'll take pics. |

Firebug wrote: Please do take pics,,that sounds neat That is the same setup I have but I used Sentra calipers instead in order to be able to get better pads without having to order them. Most parts stores keep the good sentra pads in stock. |

I was gonna take the wheel off and take better pics but it's in the 30's outside, and I hate the cold. So here's the pics I got. Like I said I turned the drum down and than drilled and tapped the "hub" so the datsun rotor would bolt to it. I used the datsun 280z calipers because the pads are huge, for the size of the caliper and rotor. I was gonna use mid 90's grand prix calipers because they are dual piston but the pads are really small. ![]()
