started on a disc brake conversion trying to do it on the cheap. picked up some new porche 914 rotors for $43 a piece. cut down my drums for hubs. flame cut the drums off then ground it somewhat straight then finished it with a brake lathe. of course painted them green. mounted them up looks pretty good and doesnt weigh a ton. just gotta get a warm day to pick up some calipers at the junkyard. any sugestions on which car to snag them from?

looks good! can you do the same process for the fronts as well? would like to make mine street legal one day, and i have seen the price of the disc brakes for the front!

Are those porsche hubs or did you make them? I think im gonna take it back apart and press in studs I hate these lug bolts. how thick of metal should i use to mount the caliper? what caliper should i use? Im sure this would work for the front too. probably be harder to mount the caliper. |

No those are type 3 hubs, made for slip on drums. They just needed turned down on the OD to fit inside the Porsche rotors. They make threaded studs that work just fine, if you interested. The material thickness depends on what type caliper you end up using, and I'm not going to be any help there, I opted for these Wilwood forged calipers. But this is the set up you have.

its a skinny rotor so i have to use a rear caliper. I was thinking maybe an impala or malibu because they dont have an e brake on the caliper. olds alero rear calipers have cooling fins but are bulky and i dont think they would fit between the edge of the rotor and the wheel. I can get super beetle calipers real cheap but cant find the pads anywhere. I just need to go to the junkyard and look around. |

Not necessarily, there are plenty of front wheel drive cars use an 11" diameter 3/8" thick rotor. Rick an Red didn't put together your using a non vented solid rotor. |

i got a buggy here with an iron duke engine and trans on it they put the entire front suspension on it. anyways it has calipers and the skinny rotors on it its out of an 85 grand am i wonder if the calpiers will work??

I was just showing an alternate to the solid rotor. If you have to machine the hub then look at the alternatives as well larger ventilated rotor that is less prone to warping. The rotors are $15.00 each and the GM calipers are $10.00 each with pads and core from any parts house anywhere. To each his own but I started building these kits with my buddy like 15 years ago. Cheap and a lot of stoping power. |

Its just a tight slip fit. I have a exhaust swelling machine, so i took a piece of 2 inch exhaust cut to the length i wanted. swelled it to fit tight in the piston, then took a piece of 1 3/4 swelled it to fit tight in the 2 inch anti rattle clip on the pad snaps in and your on your way  If you have skill like mad mike get you a hunk of aluminum and head to the lathe

I think what Rock was talking about was a spacer to make a caliper wider to work on a wide rotor. Wilwood calipers can be taken apart so that's where the spacer comes in. I've never heard of it, but that doesn't mean anything. |

Also you may look at putting press in studs in your hubs.if you use the lug bolts then get a set that is just a little longer, the regular lugs are a little short and don't get much thread. Chad

esp if u have wide five wheels like i do on four bolt hubs  so when i put rotors on ill def be needing studs

Good Thread. I don't want to highjack this discussion but I have a question. I currently have type 3 rotors ( 11" diameter 3/8" thick ) with type 3 calipers on the rear. I need to put more pad area on these rotors with a bigger caliper for better braking. Specifically, what are my caliper options? |
