ok here is my problem...what to buy!...I know a great problem to have but here is where i am stuck

For me to be street legal I need cutting brakes...

I want them anyways but I do not know what I want (two handle or single)....

and I am limited a little with space...so eghhh all opinions are help full!...

Keep in mind this is a street rail about 80% of the time...once it is built!

I would use a twin handle myself. No confusion on what handle does what.

I want to use a dual handle system but i do no know how wide they are and how much room they will take up since I want to have a dash like DVS1's rig in my rail as a great example...

I figured i can always make the handles shorter!

i agree with mike dual handle is allot less confusing i just put cnc duals in my buggy with less room than you have if your shift box aint fully welded in yet move it forward a few inches if it will be convinent still and tuck your cutters up under your shift box so when you push forward it applies the brake just my opinion on a buggy with limited room with a dash i have a short t handle shifter and it doesnt interfear with shifting or applying the cutting brake

I welded everything in around me to fit like a glove. the shifter is burned in good. I was thinking of placing them infront of the shifter with short handles so I can still use them if i am on the trails or on the road...I can always make my own handles i guess...

what is the most reliable set of dual handles?

Just curious why you need cutting brakes to be street legal? My buggy came with a set of NEAL (CNC now) and I was told if they were NEAL they were at least 10 or more years old. That is pretty reliable to me considering I only replaced them last season because they were all rusty, not because they had quit working. Your only gonna pay about 30 less dollars for the chinese ones anyway. Also the CNC ones have a handle design that is very easy to shorten.

to be street legal in NC i have to have an emergency brake system.

The gear one brakes that i have they are great but one issue...no emergency brake that i know of ... so instead of making a second caliper mount for the rear for a second brake line i am going to use cutting brakes...

the law says that i have to use a system not in conjunction of the brake pedel...which makes me think that as long as i do not need to press the barke pedel then I am legal...

this is my redneck enginering to "hoping" to bypass the DMV.

all of this just to get a custom vehical tag...

get this in NC you have to have windshiled wipers if you have a windshield but ...there is no law saying you ahve to have a windshield....so you know what im doing....yup getting titled without a windshield!...i jsut have to have "eye protection" to be legal

Your brake lines and cutters are in conjunction with the brake pedal.

I talked to Tommy Fletcher at East Coast Sand Rails in Durham at Farmington back inthe fall. He had a rail buggy there that had nylon tubing for brake lines. It also had a windshield with a inspection sticker on it. I questioned him about the nylon tubing and he told me that it was passed that way by DMV. All he had for a parking brake was a line lock???. He said Dmv also said that was OK ???. I don't see why a windshield would be needed any longer, since there are no more inspection stickers in N.C. any longer????. I agree you should only need eye protection. I guess as long as the job looks good and professional, it pretty much depends on the DMV inspector. I have cutters and line lock on mine but no ws. It will be going in soon for the DMV inspection soon, so I hope I don't have to swap out the rear calipers for a cable operated system. As far as I'm concerned, it's not an emergency brake, it's a parking brake. But then I don't make the rules. I guess it all boils down to the old addage, It's who you know or who you blow!!!!!

ok to my understanding and being with folks taht have used cuttiung brakes you do not need to engage the brake pedel to use them. meaning that i can yank on it and it will stop the wheels.

this means that since there is residual brake pressure in the lines that means that if there is a failure between the pedel and the cutting brakes im ok. but if there is a fail ure from the cutting brakes to the brakes in the rear then im screwed but i do have the front brakes that are on a different master cilynder so either way i have a 3 way brake system for a fail safe.

the line lock yes it works but you have to press the brake pedel in to engage it...that is my only worry with the NC DMV...

the law as i read it and comming from 3 people that deal with buying and selling cars in NC have told me about the windshield issue. you are right it all depends on the DMV inspector when they are determinging to giv eyou a tittle for the rail...if you are tittling it as a custom vehical then you need to make sure you have all your recipts for your parts bc that determins the value of the car that means parts and labor!...

since I do not want the windshield wipers I will being trying to go through the DMV before i install the windsheild which is going to be my last item to buy.

honestly the cutting brakes look like an emergency brake in their own right so most people will know know the difference...

I saw a guy one time stop on a very steep hill while climbing, a brake line popped and it was not good.
He never got back in a buggy after that, he was lucky a stump stopped him from going over a 60 ft cliff.
Afterwards, I always had that in the back of my mind
That is why I have a cable actuated emergency brake that works.

i am not saying that a cable system is not the right thing but when you do not have callipers that are set up that way it is hard to jsutify re-eventing the wheel it seems to make one fore the car...aka redo the calipers and scrap the nice set up that i have.

I agree that I would love to have the cable brake handle but I think that I am trying to do a step more than just throwing a line lock in...

that is pretty cool i didnt think of that ... wow i feel pretty dumb...ohh well the weekend starts soon so its ok...its been a week!

Eventually I want to add front brakes on a seperate system with a handle for such "emergencies" and going down steep hills. My buddy blew a brake line between the cutter and the brake caliper first day out on a trip. We pinched off the broken line and he just didn't touch the brake pedal all weekend and used the one cutter and rear brake that wasn't leaking. Worked all weekend (just put him into a slide every time he used it, but that is all a ratcheting rear E-brake in a panic situation on the street is gonna do anyway). Three master cylinders is a hell of a backup plan if you ask me. On a side note my old T-bird has a vacuum solenoid for the ratchet on the E-brake. Not only will it pop it automatically when you put it in gear, it will not ratchet unless in park allowing a fully variable E-brake. Still never seen another car with it.

anything but jamar jamar works great new, but they dont last and even rebuilt they wont hold i tried cnc is the only way to go, and after age the rebuild kits make em brand new again

Cool thanks for the heads up on the jamar cutters I was going to go with them since I have the jamar pro pedel anyways time to order the Cnc cutters I guess.

no problem i have jamar shifter and love it, but other than that cnc is well worth the extra few bucks

These 3/4 CNC brake and clutch pedals. At AutoZone a $5 rear brake wheel cylinder kit part # 66599 has 2 3/4 rubber cups in it identical to cnc original.May fit J mar I don't know.I keep one in my truck console with snap ring pliers. Do not install it backwards! The same BrakeWare brand is at other similar part stores.

The same kit could fit a Jmar , I don't know. But I've done it for years.

well the parents just surprised me with asking what i was looking at which was the cnc cutting brakes that i want...they said well if that is what you are wanting order them!...what a great surprise!

now just waiting for it to come in so I can get to playing with the new welder...yay for casino boats!
